lupe fiasco

You heard of this dude Skewby yet? If not, put him on your radar for up and coming hip-hop artists. Though the Tennessee rapper isn't new to the game and has been at it for a while with his 2009 mixtape Proving You Wrong since 1988.' He's got an old-school flow, much like Mos Def, and maybe more similar to the recent likes of Lupe or even Kendrick (lazy syllables melting into each other). Beyond the beat of his song, 'Go Figure,' which has some awesome soul and heavy bass, I'm impressed with his poetic content and confidence in lyrics that hit both modern day trends (social media) and battle common/mainstream preferences (tattoos). And it's not just one-liners sloppily strung together, it's a progressing story that unfolds as the song goes on in a quick sub-three minute beat.

Almost There:

Ups and Downs:

In my attempt to one-up Jordan and show him who's listening to better rap today, I'm throwing up one of my favorites. I hope I wasn't the only one who was dissapointed by Lupe's last attempt, his third album, Lasers. I listened to Food & Liquor and The Cool so much that I was almost over-hyped for Lasers. I'm happy to say that his newest single, 'Lamborghini Angels', is a much needed return to form. Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. I, is set to be released on September 25.
